The Monastery Estate today
From 1669 onwards, the Monastery Estate was built in Baroque Style. Great artists of this time such as Georg Asam, Johann Baptist Zimmermann, Johann Michael Fischer, Ignaz Günther, Johann Michael Feuchtmayer and many others made their contribution and created the Monastery as we know it today.
The Economy Building ("Maierhof") was one of the most impressive agricultural buildings of the Baroque Decade. It was also the centre of the Monastery's extensive farming activities and a truly exceptional enterprise of its time.
Termination of the Monastery
Secularisation in 1803 set an end to the beneficial work of the Benedictines, which had lasted for about one thousand years. The Monastery became secular-private property and from 1808 - 1818 the famous scientist Joseph von Fraunhofer worked there. After becoming state owned property in 1819, the buildings where used as barracks, a military base, an invalid home, a prison and a recovery centre for soldiers.
Beginning of a new period
1930 marked the beginning of a new period in the Monastery's history. The Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) purchased the estate. In an ongoing process of renovation the buildings were saved from going to ruin and so conditions for a new Spiritual and Cultural Life were set. Following the ideals of their founder Johannes Bosco (1815-1888) the Salesians of Don Bosco developed a centre for Religious Education and Science.
Nowadays, there are two universities located in the "University of Philosophy & Theology", priorities can be set on Youth Pastoral or Environmental Ethics. At the "Katholische Stiftungsfachhochschule", which was set up by the Foundation of the Catholic Dioceses of Bavaria and the Bavarian State Government, students can take a Social Work Degree. In addition, Theology and Social Work can be linked in joint studies.
The "Institute for Youth Pastoral" specialises on Science, Counselling and Further Educational Training. This concept follows the ideals of the Salesian Congregation and focuses on Young People.
The "Centre for Environment and Culture" was established in the former "Maierhof" and is the Congregation's contribution towards the Christians' responsibility for creation. Conservation and Nature Care, Nature Education Districts with training paths and biotopes, meditation- and herb garden, guided excursions offer first hand experiences to visitors. Educational Training and Seminars impart values and ecological learning to guests.
The Youth Hostel is visited by more than 10,000 young people every year and offers a wide range of activities for school classes on excursions or field trips.
At the retreat house "Aktionszentrum" young people can participate in courses for personal development and residential trips. This programme gives the opportunity to gain Life- and Spiritual Experience.
Since September 2001, the Monastery has it's own, modern energy system. The system is supplied with regenerative sources of energy (Water Turbines, Bio Mass, Solar Energy, Photovoltaic, Plant Oil) and produces over 80 % of the Estate's energy demand.
